I was born in Chorley, Lancashire in 1949. From a
very early age I always had a fascination for
drawing and painting. My Mother, who worked in
the Accounts Office at Leyland Motors, would bring
home a huge amount of discarded accounts sheets
and I would set upon their reverse and fill them
with drawings and paintings.
I was always encouraged at school to pursue some
sort of career in art, which I did, studying full-time
Graphic Design and Illustration at Bolton and
Blackpool Colleges of Art from 1967-1971. I then
worked in studios and advertising agencies in
Manchester, Coventry and London, beginning as a
designer and illustrator, progressing to Art Director
and then to Creative Director and finally co-owning
a successful design group in London.
Whilst in London I met Pauline (now my wife) who
owned a successful recruitment business there but
was originally from Bishops Castle in Shropshire.I
had always intended one day to swap the world of
commercial art for one in fine art and so in 1994 I
did exactly that and we both sold our businesses
and moved to Bishop’s Castle where I have been a
full time successful professional artist ever since.
I am a modern traditional painter working mainly in
watercolour but some oils. My favourite subjects
are coastal, marine, architectural and a spattering
of landscapes but whatever the subject my aim is
to capture light, mood and atmosphere.
I exhibit widely throughout the UK from Ludlow to
London, Ledbury, Pembrokeshire, Surrey and the
Isle of Wight.
Awards for my work include a Highest
Commendation for a watercolour at The
Tabernacle, The Museum of Modern Art in Wales;
The Lincoln Joyce Donald Blake Award for an
outstanding watercolour at the RI exhibition at the
Mall Galleries, London in 2005 and The St
Cuthberts Mill Award for the best watercolour out
of 330 paintings at the 2007 Royal Society of
Marine Artists at The Mall Galleries, as voted for by
the RSMA members themselves.
I was elected an Associate Member of the RSMA in
2005 and to full membership in 2007. I am also still
being considered for membership of the RI (Royal
Institute of Painters in Watercolours).
I hope this gives members a brief insight into my
painting life and that I will be of benefit to Ludlow
Art Society in the future. Also, I hope to be able to
assist members with painting and artistic problem
solving
